New to Waxing; When to Book Your Appointment?

Hey beauties! So, your hair is the peeeeerfect length, and you’re tooooootally down with the idea of getting a wax done. Awesome, we love to see it. 😘 Now you tell me, ‘Okay Trish, I’m in! When should I book my appointment?’

If you're waxing for a trip or a special occasion, think about how your skin may react afterward. Personally, I have thick, dark, and coarse hair. I wax 2 days before a special occasion. By then, I know my skin will be calm, and any redness or inflammation will have subsided. Others with little skin sensitivity or skin that isn't reactive, can wax the day before or even the day of the event. I wouldn't recommend this for first-time waxers, though. Book your appointment at least two days ahead of plans.

You have your appointment booked… Yay!! Now, what should you do before you arrive? My recommendation? Prep Properly!

Here is my advice…

24 Hours Before Waxing: Exfoliate (either scrub or exfoliating mitt) in circular motions. This allows all the hairs to be lifted, no matter the direction of the hair growth. Do not do this immediately before your wax! 🙅‍♀️ Hot water combined with exfoliation can soften the skin, which can cause skinning when waxing-ouch! Moisturize your skin after exfoliating. Dry skin can create a build up at the base of the hairs. This can cause a tugging feeling when removing the hair, and create a barrier for the ideal smooth finish after waxing. Avoid tanning (indoor or out) 24-48 hours before your wax. Tanned skin is damaged skin. Damaged skin isn’t as strong and can be lifted along with the wax during the service.

Same Day: Avoid caffeine before your service. Caffeine heightens your senses, causing more sensitivity during your wax. You can take ibuprofen approximately an hour before your waxing service. This will aid in the management of pain and inflammation. We also have numbing cream available! The numbing cream needs to be applied 20 minutes prior to waxing. With this in mind, you would need to either purchase this ahead of time to apply at home, or arrive 20 minutes early to apply in the wax bar. Ideally wear cotton underwear and loose fitting clothing. You want to avoid fabrics that will rub your skin after waxing.

After Your Wax: Avoid anything with heat! 🔥 Tanning, exercising, hot showers, etc. Anything with heat can cause irritation, like bumps. I have seen so many clients hop on a bike right after their service, and I just know they will regret their decision immediately, LOL! If you find your skin is tender after waxing, the best thing to do is apply a cold compress. I don't recommend putting on a bunch of different gels/creams/oils right after waxing. That usually does more harm than good. Just get a washcloth, run it under cold water, and let it sit on your waxed skin. This reduces any redness or inflammation.

When To Rebook: We recommend coming in 4 weeks after your first wax, so we can see your growth pattern. After your second wax, we will advise the next timing; either 4 weeks, or possibly pushing to 5 or 6.

*TIP*: I always tell clients to make your judgement after your second wax. The first wax, you are nervous. You likely don’t know what to expect, so you can be tense. The more tense you are, the more uncomfortable the wax is. Your hairs haven't been removed before, so they have a strong root. But hey, the good news is, each wax gets easier and easier! You will see results after your first wax, and the hairs will grow more sparse. Wait for the appropriate time in between waxes, and don't shave! You will feel the hairs glide easier upon removal, versus the first time with that tugging feeling. Eventually, you will see your hair grow in less and less, softer and finer!

I hope you all enjoyed my advice for new waxers! To summarise; grow out the hair and don’t shave! We are here to make you as comfortable as possible. Our goal is to always make sure you get smooth, and feel sexy! Check out my next blog, where I dive into product suggestions for your first below the waist service! Stay beautiful, my friends! 😘
