Waxing Precautions To Take; Whether at Home or In a Wax Bar

Hey lovelies! 😍 There are a couple of things to keep in mind to prepare for your wax. Breakouts will forever be our most disliked enemy. There are waxing precautions to consider, as well as post wax care. We can try to make this as painless as possible! Let’s get started!

Waxing Precautions: At The Salon
 💆

Although this is focused on a professional setting, these are tips that should be followed if you are waxing yourself at home as well!

Ask ahead of time what their steps are. This is your body you are trusting them with; you should know if they are professional and know what they are doing. If they can’t answer your questions, that’s a good sign to avoid going there!

This is what I look out for when getting a wax;

  • Does the room have disposable items?

  • Is there a disposable sheet covering the bed, wooden sticks for single use (no double dipping!!)?

  • Is the room tidy; does every item used in service have a designated home and can surfaces be easily disinfected?

  • Are they wearing gloves when handling wax sticks, strips, and touching your skin (including a quick lip wax)?

  • Are tweezers and scissors kept in a closed container to avoid contamination?

  • During the service are they cleansing your skin; applying a barrier before wax is applied, cleansing & soothing skin again after wax completion?

Have you been told, “Oh don’t worry, the wax is hot, bacteria won’t survive!”

This is not true! 🙅

If the wax was kept at a temperature that was hot enough to kill microorganisms, it would be too hot to be applied to your skin. The wax is literally kept at a temperature that is a breeding ground for bacteria

So, what does that mean?

Do not double dip! Even if it's your own wax pot, only dip the applicator once before discarding it. Every application requires a new stick. Using a new stick each time ensures that no microorganisms are introduced into the wax! If you go to a professional, it's even more critical that the salon or spa takes this precaution!

Are they using a roll on cartridge? First off, this isn’t my fav. The roller moves over your skin, releasing the wax, and rolling back in the cartridge; creating a constant double dip motion! You could have something on one part of your body that is then carried over to another. This is a suuuper easy way to spread something you don’t particularly want in the first place! This cannot be reused (both in a salon or at home). The wax is not hot enough to kill microorganisms! A roll on cartridge should always be tossed after each use!

Here at Bare Wax Bar, we use a combination of hard and soft wax. We treat all skin as if it were wax-sensitive, applying a thin layer of oil (for hard wax) or cornstarch (for soft/strip wax) to the area to be waxed. The oil creates a barrier between your skin and the wax; when the wax is applied, the wax adheres to the hairs and not your skin! This helps to prevent breakouts from contact irritation. The powder assists the wax in grabbing your hairs while also absorbing excess oil/moisture and reducing contact discomfort. Tea tree-based wax can also help prevent acne! Tea tree oil is commonly utilized in acne skin care products because of its antibacterial characteristics. Those who are prone to breakouts after waxing may see fewer pimples if they use a wax that contains the essential oil from native Australian plants, in addition to other measures.

Bare Wax Bar’s 4 Steps to Smooth Skin:

  • Cleanse: Our pre-wax cleanser removes makeup, oil and/or lotion from your skin.

  • Protect: Next, we apply either a pre-wax oil or powder to ensure the wax adheres to your hairs and not your skin.

  • Remove: We gently remove the hair for a virtually painless experience.

  • Soothe: We cleanse again, to close your hair follicles. Then we apply a soothing lotion to reduce redness or inflammation, and remove any wax residue.

There you have it, lovelies! That’s my short and sweet tips on what to look out for pre-wax! Acne is the bane of our existence, but with some proper care, we can do our best to avoid it. Hang tight loves, I will have much more educational content coming your way! Stay beautiful, my friends! 😘
